TIMES NEWS NETWORK Times Of India Mangalore; Aug 21, 2005; Section:Karnataka; Page Number:4

Manipal: "We should set our benchmark high and it should be broadened with the international standard " said Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO of Biocon, speaking at the CXO Conclave on Leaders Perspective on the subject 'Can India be a global leader in aiming for the bigger share of the Pharma/biotech market. The conclave conducted by the Manipal Acunova, virtually became a brain storming session with the participation of leading personalities from the field of pharma and biotech and also scientists of national research centres. Kiran Shaw was in Manipal to inaugurate the Acunova KH Centre and receive the honorary doctorate conferred on her by MAHE, Manipal.

Kiran said, 'Time has come to manufacture drugs in terms of affordability in the world market. India needs clearly thought out strategies for this. At every level, we should discover, develop and commercialise in a strategic way. Compared to other countries, India has a large population and many diseases too.'

She said 'In today's times, nobody can work in isolation to bring out a big result. We should go for collaborations and if we synergise talents, we can do better.'

Kiran added that India was lacking in pre-clinical research. Citing examples, she said in Netherlands a human digestic tract mimicked in their laboratory has turned out to be very useful for their scientists.

Dr Vijaraghavan, director NCBS said the the tools of basic research needed high investment. Interaction between industries and academia is very essential, he said, suggesting that inter linking MD and Ph.d would bring out more result in the research sphere.

Hatpal Singh, chairman Fortis Healthcare, D.A. Prasanna, Manipal Acunova, the chancellor and vicechancellor also spoke on the occasion.

'Innovative minds under-utilised'

Manipal: Kiran Mazumadar Shaw later inaugurated the Manipal Acunova KH Clinical research Centre at Saibab Hospital. Later, she also visited the Life Science Centre at Manipal. She lauded the research work done especially on molecular biology and stem cells. Addressing the scientists and others, she said converting human capital into intellectual capital is one challenge faced by our country. Though we have abundant of innovative minds, they are under utilised.

She assured that Biocon would co-operate with the Manipal Group in clinical research, especially in pre clinical area. She observed that in US 80% of new discoveries in molecular models are from universities and not industries, so university and research centres should be given thrust. Now generic and personalised medicine and pharmagenomics are very much in progress even in India. Kiran Mazumdar said she was happy to note the progress made in the Life Science Centre.
